Well, the timing couldn’t be any better, as I have officially completed studies as a Child and Youth Worker during CYW Week!
Things are moving forward! I have been hired on as a 1:1 worker by Eastern Residential Services (ERS Foster Care) and will be supporting youth in care and their foster families in the Brantford, Hamilton, Caledonia, and surrounding area.
Earlier this week, I met with Grand Erie District School Boards’ School Mental Health and Well-being Lead to discuss making Matters known and available to youth in our area’s high schools. With first steps planned for Paris District H.S., I’d like to put up posters and submit a brief introduction to the Matters site, and Free Spirits initiative. Making sure that all youth, no matter what age, ability, or circumstances might find them struggling, or needing support, have the ways and means of accessing support is crucial to health, happiness, and connection to community.
Individual empowerment benefits us all.
This morning, I posted on kijiji to put the word out about upcoming support groups for youth here in Paris, and hope to receive feedback on what kind of themes, and needs are needing to be met. With creation and facilitation experience in groups for anxiety, depression, self-harm, self-esteem, motivation, and more, I am eager to offer the space and opportunity for youth to engage in, and find support in the group process. The power of groups is unmistakable, and the youth I have worked with in the past are my greatest references, and testifiers to that.
While time and money take their time, I continue to work on ways to offer support and services to those in our community, and beyond, who may be unaware of community resources, waiting on lists, or unable to afford services.
There should be no barriers when it comes to individual support, empowerment, and learning. Step by step, I’m making my own way towards personal and professional goals, and have you all in mind while doing so.
Start the conversations! Write to me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know what you, or our community needs! Together, we can work towards success. 🙂
